Calumet Community Garden Seeks Gardeners for 2023 Growing Season
The Calumet Community Garden is still covered with a deep blanket of snow but local gardeners are already thinking about planting seeds (if they haven’t started already). This year there are seven plots available in the Community Garden for the 2023 growing season, with applications being accepted until April 15th. The garden, which was established in 2021 provides area residents the opportunity to grow healthy, affordable, fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs for their households. It also serves to beautify the downtown environment, create positive interactions and provide a location for food education and socializing. “It’s been great to see people come out to take care of their plants, water the garden’s fruit trees and just be outside enjoying the downtown”, reports Paul Grathoff, owner of North End Framing, located across the street from the garden. The Calumet Community Garden is a collaborative effort between the Village of Calumet, the Village of Calumet Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and Main Street Calumet. The Village donated use of the property for a garden space to activate a previously vacant lot, the DDA serves as a fiduciary, paying the small annual water bill and Main Street Calumet provides organizational capacity, communicating with gardeners as needed. According to Main Street Calumet Executive Director Leah Polzien, “it’s a classic win-win situation, this underutilized space has come back to life and each contributing organization is a small step closer to achieving their mission”. The Calumet Community Garden is home to 16 individual plots, each 4’x8’ and about 18” tall, composed of rough sawn pine. The annual plot fee for a single plot is $20, plus 8 volunteer hours per household per season. There are currently 7 available plots for the 2023 growing season. If fewer gardeners apply then are needed to fill available plots, current gardeners may apply to receive an additional plot. If more than 7 gardeners apply, those gardeners who are residents of the Village of Calumet will be given preference. Applications are available on-line until April 15th, just click the button below to complete the application! Comments are closed.
